Two more that I'll never finish. The idea on the upper one was to do a Skeletor. I wanted to redraw it as a demon monster all pumped up or a really skeletal sorcerer. This one here was supposed to be just me figuring out the original one. The bottom one was just a sketch.

I haven't post for a while. So here's my first attempt at the Chow competition of this past week on the conceptart.org site. I didn t have much time and I did really bad on this one, so in the end, i just threw a shameless lens flare right in the middle so no one could stare at it for long :D so here's 'Atomic, the man of the Atom', or, like his wicked enemies call him, here's 'Mr Golden Pants'.

YEYY!!! - 100th POST!!! - It's almost a year since I started this blog and I'm quite happy to see how much I upgraded my drawing and my painting skills since. Although it is still far away from where I want to get, the progress is happening and that's what I want most. That, and to enjoy the ride :D I have to thank all my friends that help me to progress, specially Ben Ho that always find time to give me some wisdom. ROCK ON!! Anyway, my birthday was last Sunday and me and my girlfriend went to the river and did some canoeing with some friends at night. The moon was there, millions of stars, and it felt like it should always be. So yeah, this one is cheesy all the way :D :D :D

It would take me day and a half more or less if I had done it in one go. It's still too much time for something like this, but at least I think I'm improving a bit, and I guess I understand better the process. Anyway, it's not that good but I think it's a good effort. If I knew how I would try to work more on a few things that I think are missing, like humidity and texture (I would say).

It seems I revisited my love for old Sci-Fi book covers. I'm still trying to find new ways or methods to develop my drawing from a sketch phase to something a bit better. Although I haven't polished this one, I really like it because it turned out better than what I was expecting. This one goes for my friend Ben Ho who is always encouraging everyone he knows.

I've been trying some new ways of thinking about painting. The mountains are very sketchy but I think it's better than what I used to do. I've tried to approach it the same way I do when I'm copying photos. The soldier is one of the first tries in a method that looks more like colouring. I left the lines just to remind me that I need to have more definition in my paintings. Can't have them looking like this.

This one is not from a photo. I've just put something on my bed and tried to paint it. I have to do one of these per day!! I took three hours and a half to do this one. I can see some bits I could improve, but I'm really trying to stick to less than 3 hours. So what I get is what it stays. Back to copying from photos. There's two things that I really work on when I do these. First is my sense of values. And after that is my ability to match colours. On these two things (among others) I'm really simple. I have to keep doing these for a while. A third thing I want to get better is the attention to the details, but be honest I'm still really slow. It took me about a hour and a half for each of these.

Here's something I was trying to do that is obviously too elaborated for my level. I waste too much time when I should continue doing exercises. Particulary drawing. The only thing I'm going to try to do with colour in the next few weeks is just to observe and try to understand. So here it is. I did the values and then just put a colour layer on top. Couldn't be asked anymore because I'm trying to guess instead of trying to practice, so,... back to the exercises!

Here's my new way of working. From now on, when I do 2 hours of copying anatomy, I'll do right after an hour of anatomy from my own head. And I'll try to do it for other exercises too. So these are the first I came up with. I still have a lot to learn about the torso. BRING IT ON!!!

I'm back. And I do hope that I don't have to stop again. Here's some stuff that I've been copying from an Anatomy book (I always forget the name). Anyway, yeah, I have to work big time on anatomy. I was trying to learn about women but quickly I saw that I don't even know the basics for anatomy. So this is the start. I'm going to copy this book from cover to cover. Some people say it's worth it, some people say it isn't, and some people (like me) don't really care about what some people have to say. NOT YOU BEN!! It's for a grad film and for the first time I was happy with the process that I used to mix the pencil with the digital media. I still don't like the layout but I don't know if that's because I'm a huge comic book fan. Here are some more exercises that I've been doing. Hands! Can’t seem to be enough ever. They're really good to get me into this habit of sketching everyday more and faster. Women! I'm always disappointed with what I do when I try to draw a woman body, and it's been like this for a long time. I can't believe I'm showing this here. But hey, when I decided to do this blog one of the things I wanted was to post here ALL the steps of the way, and not only the ones that I like more. So, these are my first try at caricatures. I intend to do at least one per day. These look really horrible. My intention (for now) is to have them without a finished look. I just want to learn how to distort someone’s face without making it unrecognizable. So here's my first couple of tries. The bald one was supposed to be Billy Corgan, the second Tom Cruise, and the third Bruce Willis. I'm just a little bit happy with the last one. Some more exercices like the ones from yesterday. I pick a nice photo and USING THE COLOUR PICKER I try to copy it. I do this with a thick brush so I can observe subtles variations in colour on the same surface. I really don't like to use the colour picking tool. I feel like I'm cheating. But, these exercices are really helping me to see some stuff I never noticed before. I think I'll do a couple more in the next few days and then I'll stop using that tool. blerrghh. Here are some more exercices I've been doing. Hands and more hands. Some more anatomy from my imagination. My comic books love always drops in and I seem to always be forcing this crazy perspective on the figures. So for now some of them really look weird. Also, I still have loads to understand when it comes to bones and joints, etc. The third one is from a sculpture. I have to do more of that. These are all from photos. I colour pick the colours from the photos and then just throw them to the study. I use a thick brush and I don't care about detail. I take a bit more than half an hour for each and I wish I could get faster. They're not much. It's almost like painting with numbers I guess. What I'm trying with these is to have a better understanding of how colours work. I already found out some things I didn't know and later I'll try to do some stuff from my imagination having these exercices in mind. Let's see if it works. For now, I'll keep on trying a couple of these per day.

More sketches! It's amazing what some fashion designers come up with. I find some of their work really inspiring. These ones are taken from Balenciaga collections photos, and I'm definitely going to look more into this kind of stuff. The anatomy ones are not very good but I'm actually very happy with them because this is something that I was fighting with one month ago. These I didn't copy and tried to do the anatomy the best I could. Now at least I can put down a quick sketch of what I'm thinking. (althought these are not quick sketches).

When I don't post stuff it doesn't mean I'm doing nothing. Actually, lately I found again the love I used to have for drawing. Not only have I felt that it helps to improve my painting, it also makes me look into some stuff that I usually don't observe enough. So, these are all from photos except the one where people are in the chairs. That one was an attempt at drawing in the canteen. Have to find a better place for this kind of exercise. The animals I do it to try to get more acquainted with different anatomies, and the sport ones are just great to catch real bodies in action. And the hands, well I'm already feeling some improvement when I try to make a hand. So I have to keep them going.

This armour has more colour than a rainbow. I couldn't get it right but it was very good as a study. It needs more light. A couple more studies. Sometimes I feel like trying to do less detailed studies of metal, but I came to realize that what I really enjoy in paintings that have armours in them, is the detail that makes some of those pieces look like they jump from the page (or screen). No new study here today. Just have something to say. From now on, this is a blog that everyone can read. As I said in portuguese in my first post, on this blog I'll put everything I do while I'm trying to learn how to do digital painting. All my studies will be here. It is not a kind of portfolio blog or anything like that. It is just a place to keep myself in check and a place to share with friends I don't see everyday, what I'm doing most of the time. Finally, it is a place where I hope people leave me some advice on how to progress further. Por isso a partir de agora vai sair tudo em inglês. Às poucas pessoas que nao percebem totalmente o inglês eu explicarei o que ponho no blog. Aqueles que escrevem na minha lingua e gostariam de deixar comentários, gostaria que o continuassem a fazer em português. Afinal, ia ser giro ter um blog com várias linguas a aparecer :)
